Arthurian Legends Presentation

Objectives

This presentation project will allow you and a partner to explore an aspect of Arthurian legends and share with your fellow classmates how this legend had been transmitted into our modern world.

Procedures

v    This is a partner project, but if scheduling conflicts exist that prevent this, solo presentations may be done.

v    Select one item from your Arthurian 'People, Places, Things' list that you find appealing to you.  You may also examine one of the 'suspects' for the 'historical' Arthur.  If there is some overlap in themes you can combine them. Example: Excalibur/singing sword.

v    Using the resources available in our school Library as well as materials you can acquire from our local public libraries conduct research into the history and legend behind your selected theme.  As we have discussed, some aspects of Arthurian legend may be quassi-historical, while others are mythological, literary, fictional, or a combination of all of these.  Feel free to explore any of these ideas! Be creative, this is your chance to learn more about some aspect of Arthurian lore that fascinates you, so explore the rich collection of Arthurian lore that is an integral component of our Western heritage.

v    Once you have selected a topic you will want to create a presentation that teaches the class the following things:

1.     Explanation and overview of your Arthurian legend.

2.     Has the portrayal of this legend changed over the centuries? Example: Gwynivere has been portrayed differently over the years.

3.     A visual presentation for the class.  This could be a piece of artwork about an Arthurian legend or one you create yourself.

4.     Supply an example and excerpt from a book about the Arthurian legends.  There have been thousands of books and book series written about a King Arthur theme.  Use the following link as a starting point for your research: www.royalty.nu/legends/Arthur.html

5.            Presentations need to be 7-10 minutes in length.

Celtic Mythology

For your research presentation you may also pursue a topic in Celtic mythology.  Celtic mythology plays a great role in the legends of King Arthur.  Many of the religious mythological, magical, and landscapes are from Celtic legends and lore.  Libraries and the Internet abound with material on this topic.  Two uselful links for you to begin with are below. A word of caution.  Be careful what books and site you use.  Not all of them are credible sources.
